Donna asks…
How does one learn to write/compose music?
I can compose music in my head, but I have no idea how to write it down.
Learning to play the piano at the moment, wondering if I should look into Music Theory and Musicianship books and classes.
I can remember most of what I come up with and can hum out the melody and here other instruments and vocals as well (going into detail so that you can get an idea of what I’d like to write down).
What should I do? I welcome any and all answers, especially joke ones.

Don Caron and friends answers:
Definitely take music theory. I’ve been playing piano for 9 years so I already know the basics, but learning theory has reinforced those basics and taught me more. It makes composing a lot easier. Not only that, it makes practicing a lot easier because you make connections between chords and arpeggios and scales! It simplifies music–at least for the first semester!

Linda asks…
Looking for some top quality music colleges to look into?
l’m a junior in high school, pretty normal grades, average. I’m looking into becoming a choir director and a music theory professor. I’ve been going on and off at the idea of becoming a band director..I’ve wanted to for years but am seeing myself leaning more towards liking ,understanding, and acheiving more in choir.
I dont want to go to a school that just so happens to HAVE a music program..I wanna look into music schools that arent jokes.
I only know of about 2 around here. Juliard is a REALLY good school, but the thought of me even TRYING to get into a place like that scares me.
Have any ones to look into for what I’m wanting to do?
I really do want to get my PHD, if I was, would i need to major in just general music education or choir and band? Or could I get one for music theory?
Thanks
I live in Illinois in the U.S.

Jenny asks…
Why is music so horrible nowadays? It makes me want to cry.?
I am such a music lover. I listen to all types of music (except country, with the exception of Johnny Cash). I’m currently being classically trained in voice and probably going to study either voice and opera or composition in college. I also play piano and write my own music. But anyways, music now is just so horrible like it really does make me want to cry.
It’s all the same now, like every genre is pop music now. Rap isn’t rap, it’s pop. Country isn’t country, it’s pop. Rock, even electronic, dance, soul, R&B, and whoever claims those genres are nothing but pop musicians now. It’s like the originality and heart has just been beaten out of music. I love real hip-hop, I loved the DJs and how they sampled and mixed and it took skill to make the music and it took skill to actually rap. Now its all computarized dance pop junk. Rock music is such a fun, energetic genre that just comes together and makes you want to go wild and those musicians played around and experimented, with music theory and the sound to make something grand. Now if you can play 3 chords, play bass notes, play a simple 4/4 drum beat, and sing some cheesy lyrics over it all you have a “rock” song. There’s no more R&B and Soul singers, they’re just black pop singers (I never say racial things but its true). Hell, even dance and electronic music is a fading genre, you don’t need DJs anymore, just get some one who can play songs on a computer and hook a keyboard to it and bang some notes. Pop music, even back when there were some songs that shouldn’t be popular but real pop stars that overtook the genre had to have talent to do it and a lot of times it was geniously composed and thought out. Look at Michael Jackson! Country music is even pop and I don’t even like country and I feel bad for true country music lovers. Classical music is the only thing that I can run to because you have composers who are trained musicians and you have musicians who continully reinvent classical repertoire from the past. Sometimes I joke with my friend who writes and wants to be a singer like me that we need to make it in the industry and save it. It’s so sad, as musician and a music enthusiast to see something so beautiful be beaten like this. I swear everyday I just hope there will be some kind of Jesus for pop as in popular to save us from the atrocity. This wasn’t much of a question I just want to hear everyone’s opinon.
Well I mean I know plenty of artist and I mostly listen to music from the past and classical, but I mean its just mostly what the masses buy up that makes me miserable.
I hate mtv and I hate radio. I do look for music from other sources. And yes I know Bach and all plenty of other composers used primary chords, but I’m just making a point. I’m just ranting about pop music and its overall state and the industry. Geez.

Just let Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift get married and deport them to some remote island in Fiji!
Then we can have music back to the basics.
